John Wes Townley began racing competitively in go-karts at the age of nine. After claiming numerous championships in various go-kart classes, he made the jump to Bandoleros and continued his assault on track titles, including the prestigious Thursday Thunder championship at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
After gaining further experience in the popular Legends Series, Townley made the plunge full-time into the ASA Late Models Series in 2006. He wound up a respectable fifth in season-long points in his rookie season.
Looking to gain additional seat time to move closer to his goal of becoming a NASCAR Sprint Cup driver, Townley raced nearly every weekend in 2007 by competing on a full-time basis in the ASA Late Model Series while managing to fulfill a part-time schedule in the NASCAR Busch East and USAR Pro Cup Series.
He was rewarded with a career-best fourth in ASA Late Model Series points. Townley's season was highlighted by a popular victory in ASA Late Model competition at New Senoia (Ga.) Raceway in September.
In 2008 Townley joined the ARCA RE/MAX Series and RAB Racing. In just his first season Townley amassed one top-five, nine top-10 and 16 top-15 finishes and on the strength of the 18-year-old's efforts, the team finished seventh in the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series Championship point standings. Along with running a full schedule in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, Townley also competed in three NASCAR Nationwide Series races with RAB Racing and seven NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races for Roush Fenway Racing.
2009 will mark Townley's first full-time season in NASCAR's second-tier division, the NASCAR Nationwide Series and will battle other notable rookies for Raybestos Rookie of the Year honors.
